HIGHER GROUND

During May 2022, Lismore was devastated by a 14.4m flood, causing destruction to the entire northern rivers area, less than a month later, it flooded again, this time reaching a height of 9.5m. As I was raised in the area, and many of my friends and family were affected by this disaster, this is a topic super close to my heart. I crewed up a small team of AFTRS students and we set out to create a short documentary documenting the aftermath of the floods, fully funded by ourselves. We arrived 6 weeks after the second flood to shoot interviews, B-Roll, and the cities culture for 5 days. The area still felt post-apocalyptic. Being on this project was one of the hardest challenges I have had as a cinematographer. I was trying to find the balance of documenting what was needed for the film whilst remaining respectful to those who had lost their homes and their lives. It was a reality inducing experience and reminded me of why I wanted to make films to begin with. The film is still in post production and is expected to be in 2024.
